How can I fix my dripping tap?

One drip per second can waste more than 80 litres of water a day. One of the reasons for a dripping tap might be a faulty washer.  If you have a tap with a faulty washer which is causing the tap to leak, then you might be able to fix the problem yourself.  Fixing a leaking tap should not be too tricky if you have the right tools and a bit of luck!

First you will need to turn off the water supply, either at the main stopcock, or if you have them, at the isolating valves under the sink. Then turn on the tap to drain any water left in the pipe.

It's a good idea to put the plug in just in case you drop anything! Remove the top of the tap, then remove the main valve nut with a spanner. Pull out the shaft and replace the faulty washer with a new one of the same size.  Hopefully, you will be able to fix your leaking taps quickly but if you get stuck, we're always here to help on 020 8996 2930.

DIY Tip Of The Day

Painting

A quick lick of paint can really freshen up a room or hallway. If you use a roller to paint the walls, leave a 2cm gap between the top of the wall and the ceiling, corners, skirting and sockets. Use a brush to paint neatly up to the edge. The professional term is “cutting in”.

Bright and Breezy

Has your Monday morning gone as quickly as mine? I can't believe we're on the home stretch already! Must be that wind blowing time away.

And its not just time blowing away - what about all those leaves! Aside from delaying trains, those pesky leaves can find their way into your guttering.

If you've neglected your guttering why not book a guttering inspection with our drainage expert. He can give your gutters and drains the once over, looking for faults such as cracks and leaks. He will also clean out any debris and remove other obstructions found along the way.

Top tip:
Use the fallen leaves from your garden (or local park) to make leafmould. Well rotted leaves can be used as sowing compost (or potting compost if mixed with sharp sand, garden compost & good soil). It's dead simple to make - store the leaves in loosely tied black bin bags pierced with a few holes. VoilĂ . The hard part is finding somewhere to store them. Its not a quick process by any means as it can take a couple of years to mature. On the upside, you'll have a free supply of compost.

DIY Tip Of The Day

Fix a toilet that won't flush

If your toilet won't flush, a possible cause could be a faulty link between the handle and the siphon. Take the lid off of the toilet and see if the linkage has broken, fallen off or bent. If the link is bent you may be able to straighten it. If its broken you will need to buy a replacement. A quick temporary fix is to make a link out of a bit or wire coat hanger bent with pliers.

DIY Tip Of The Day

Drilling

Before you go drilling into your walls it can be handy to know exactly where to drill. A stud finder / metal detecting tool can be very useful. If for example you're putting up heavy shelves, you'll want to fix them to the studs - the wooden battens that secure plasterboard walls. Similarly, there are things you won't want to drill into such as plumbing and electrics. The metal detector will find pipes and wires saving you any nasty shocks!

DIY Tip Of The Day

Wiring a plug

Here's an easy way to remember which wire goes where:

Blue goes on the left. The second letter of blue is L = Left

Brown goes on the right. The second letter of brown is R = Right

That leaves the green earth wire which goes in the middle.

What Happen's When The Warm Spell Ends?

The weather we've been having is great. But how much longer can it last? October is usually the month that people turn on their heating, but with this unexpected warm spell, most people haven't had the need.

When its not in use your boiler's out of sight, out of mind. Do you know when you had it serviced last?

Avoid any unexpected surprises and book a boiler service before it gets cold and you're without heating.
