First you will need to turn off the water supply, either at the main stopcock, or if you have them, at the isolating valves under the sink. Then turn on the tap to drain any water left in the pipe.
It's a good idea to put the plug in just in case you drop anything! Remove the top of the tap, then remove the main valve nut with a spanner. Pull out the shaft and replace the faulty washer with a new one of the same size.
