How can I fix my dripping tap?

One drip per second can waste more than 80 litres of water a day. One of the reasons for a dripping tap might be a faulty washer.  If you have a tap with a faulty washer which is causing the tap to leak, then you might be able to fix the problem yourself.  Fixing a leaking tap should not be too tricky if you have the right tools and a bit of luck!

First you will need to turn off the water supply, either at the main stopcock, or if you have them, at the isolating valves under the sink. Then turn on the tap to drain any water left in the pipe.

It's a good idea to put the plug in just in case you drop anything! Remove the top of the tap, then remove the main valve nut with a spanner. Pull out the shaft and replace the faulty washer with a new one of the same size.  Hopefully, you will be able to fix your leaking taps quickly but if you get stuck, we're always here to help on 020 8996 2930.
